As previously mentioned, the practice of sending invitations to social gatherings on the back of a playing card stretches back at least several hundred years. So it's only natural that it would extend to the postcard craze at the turn of the 20th century.
This card from 1908 is an invitation for both dinner and dancing though the participant seemingly wrote this one as a feel-better card for a person who was suffering from rheumatism and seemingly couldn't join the festivities.
